The last few days leading up to the most violent border clash between India and China after the 62 war, according to reports China procured in portions of machinery, cut a trail into a Himalayan mountainside, and may have even dammed a river, satellite pictures suggest.
The conflict was triggered by a chain of two Chinese tents and observation towers that India said had been built on its side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC), Indian government sources in New Delhi and on the Indian side of the border in the Ladakh region said so on its official records.
Amid border clashes, Indians have called for boycotting Chinese products, and its getting intensified day by day. While India relies heavily on imports from China, a much smaller portion of China’s imports are from India. India’s unicorns are also heavily dependent on enterprises from China. Therefore an economic boycott seems infeasible.
I had looked its the data and here’s what I found-
In FY19, 5.1% of India’s exports were preordained for China, while only 3% of China’s came to India. Also, 13.7% of India’s imports were from China, while only 0.9% of China’s were from India.
Imports from China accounted for over 14% of India’s total imports in FY20 (until Feb.), the highest share among all the nations. Exports to China accounted for over 5% of India’s exports, the third-highest. This figure tells that we have a much bigger problem to deal with with with than we actually thought of.
However, if we start little by little we can bring a huge change, if we remember the time before 2014, when having a Chinese phone used to be a disgrace, most of the mobile users relied on Indian brands like Micromax, Lava, Intex, etc. What exactly went wrong with them?? Really not sure about it.
But one thing is for sure China is rattled by the “boycott” Chinese products campaign in India, which had begun with our prominent Ladakhi voices in the middle of the stand-off in eastern Ladakh, but has now cascaded into a wave of national anger after the killing of 20 Indian soldiers in clashes with Chinese troops in Galway Valley on Monday.
These voices had started from Ladakh where a prominent environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk was the first to call for the boycott of Chinese commodities. He had started the slogans: ‘Boycott China’, ‘Boycott Made in China’, ‘Anywhere but China’ which is now discovering an echo all across the country.
There is a cascade of articles and testimonies in the Chinese media on Beijing’s concern over the ‘boycott China’ campaign. These articles have urged, suggested, and requested Indians not to resort to this ‘extreme step’. There is a consistent indication to Indians that their connections with China have advanced through centuries.
Well this suggests than whatever happened in the last few days is definitely hurting Bejing to its core, else the communist mouthpiece won’t have uttered out its dismay too soon.
